Potters Fall in Seesaw Series Finale

By Jordan Georgeson

The Lincoln Potters and San Luis Obispo Blues wrapped up their weekend series today in a back and forth game at McBean. The Blues struck first with a big two-run homer in the second inning by Mason Grotto. They were able to add one more in the third thanks to an RBI single by Thomas Trinca. The Potters answered back with crooked numbers in the third and fourth innings to pull ahead 4-3. The Blues responded quickly and were able to tie the ballgame up before using a big seventh inning to pull ahead 7-4. The Potters got two back in the bottom of the seventh to close in. The Blues added an insurance run in the ninth but the Potters threatened by loading the bases in the ninth but unfortunately couldn’t bring anyone home. The Blues held on to win 8-6, sweeping the weekend series.

The Potter offense was able to respond to the Blues bats today, something that they struggled with in the first two games of the series. Matt Voelker added yet another RBI to his total for the year with a fielder’s choice in the third inning. Jason Brandow brought home two more runners with a sacrifice fly in the third and a crucial double in the seventh. Jacob Shaver earned his first RBI as a Potter today with a single in the fourth inning that tied the game. The Potters saw the ball well at the plate and were able to threaten multiple times throughout the contest.

The Potters cleaned up some of the defensive issues that were plaguing the team in the first two games and didn't have any errors on the day. Starting pitcher Jojo VIllareal was pulled early but had a good outing, going two and two third innings and only allowing two earned runs. Shane Gustafson was impressive in his Potter debut, going four and a third innings and shutting down the San Luis Obispo bats. Unfortunately, he did earn the loss after a big seventh inning for the Blues.

Tomorrow is an off day for the Potters before they hit the road to Fairfield on Tuesday for a league game against the Solano Mudcats. Watch the Potters live on Facebook and listen on Potters Radio via the mixlr app. Also follow along on twitter @LincolnPotters to get live updates!
