Prune Packers Take Series Opener

A new week of baseball has begun in Lincoln, and the stakes are higher than ever. A marquee PEL series featuring the first place Healdsburg Prune Packers and the second place Lincoln Potters began on Tuesday night, with game 2 going back to Healdsburg and game 3 in Lincoln once again. A quick start from the Packers was all they needed to put this game away, as they took the opening matchup 9-4.

The opening frame suggested that a pitcher’s duel could be in the works, as starter Adan Perez quickly retired the first three batters of the game, and Healdsburg’s starter did exactly the same. The Packers’ bats would come alive in the second however, as a double and a home run in back-to-back at-bats put the visitors up 2-0. One more in the third and two more in the fifth would give Healdsburg a five run cushion that was all they needed to cruise through this game.

The Potters’ offense did not go quietly however, as they strung together two innings of offense throughout the ballgame, one of which seeing them manufacture three runs to cut the Packers’ lead to two, thanks in large part to Payton Brennan’s 2-run single. Healdsburg would quickly come up with three runs of their own in response, but Lincoln’s own Zach Chamizo would score the final run of the game for the Potters, smashing a solo home run over the right field wall.

That would be the end of the action for the Potters, as the eight and ninth innings were quickly taken care of by the Prune Packers, who improved to 16-2 in PEL play with the 9-4 win. Game two will see the series head to Healdsburg before the final game of the series will be played here at McBean Stadium, with first pitch scheduled for a late 7:35pm start due to the heat in the area.
