The Lincoln Potters recorded their second shutout of the season in Saturday night’s CCL contest against the Walnut Creek Crawdads. The Potters got on the board with a run in the third inning and then blew the game wide open in the fourth, putting up five runs to jump out to a 6-0 lead. They added three more in the fifth to finish the scoring and win the game 9-0. With tonight’s win, the Potters move into sole possession of second place in the CCL North Division and have a one game lead over the Solano Mudcats. 

The Potter offense remained strong tonight, with nine runs on thirteen hits in the contest. Jake Sapien put the Potters on the board in the third with an RBI single that brought home Jeffrey David. The Potters took control of the game thanks to a big five-run fifth inning, with runs coming home off of the bats of Jeffrey David, Jake Sapien, and Jacob Shaver. Two runs also scored on an error following a fielder’s choice by Trevor Haskins. Shaver hit an RBI triple in the fifth, followed by an RBI single by Trevor Haskins and an RBI double by Jeffrey David to close out the scoring for the Potters. 

Lincoln’s pitching was dominant all night, only giving up three hits in the shutout. Carter Delaney made his first start of the season tonight and earned the win as well, going five innings and allowing just two hits while striking out six. Lucas Wepf entered the game in the sixth and was just as dominant as Delaney, retiring all nine batters that he faced in his three innings pitched. Wepf retired three batters on strikes as well. Matt Ornelas finished things up for the Potters on the mound in the ninth, allowing just one hit and keeping the Crawdads off the board to preserve the shutout. Trevor Haskins. Drew Stahl, and Trace Willhoite all made impressive defensive plays that took several hits away from the Walnut Creek offense.

“Carter Delaney man, he wants the ball. You know he comes out here and he dominates man. That kid’s going to be a great pitcher for Folsom Lake next year. He can go for an extended pitch count and that’s what he did tonight and he did a great job.” said manager Ryan Stevens after the game. “We’re playing great baseball and hopefully we sustain it for the month of July and we are in it at the end.”
