Lincoln Takes Game One of Weekend

By Jordan Georgeson

The Lincoln Potters took game one of the four-game weekend series from the Seattle Studs last night in their return to McBean. The Potters struck early and often, putting up runs in six of their eight innings at the plate. Lincoln struck first, putting up three in the first and adding one more in the second to pull out to an early 4-0 lead. They added another in the third and put up crooked numbers in the fourth and fifth to extend their lead to 9-1. The Studs got a few runs back but never really threatened and the Potters hung on for an 11-4 win. The Potters have now won twenty of their last twenty three games.

The Potter offense was on fire for the second game in a row, as they have now scored in thirteen of their last seventeen innings at the plate. Chase Stanke got the scoring started in the first with an RBI single that scored Jeffrey David. Stanke wouldn’t have to wait long to score himself, as Trey Furrey blasted his sixth home run this week in the next at-bat. Stanke added another RBI when he walked with the bases loaded in the second inning. Jeffrey David had another strong performance at the plate, going 2-4 with a solo homer in the fifth and two runs batted in. Trevor Haskins went deep for the second day in a row with a solo shot to lead off the fifth inning. Carson Blatnick, Jake Sapien, and Trace Willhoite each brought runs home as well. The Potters totaled eleven runs on twelve hits and left ten men on base.

Shane Gustafson took the mound for the Potters last night in what would be his fifth start of the season. Gustafson had a strong outing, retiring the first eight batters that he faced in the ballgame. He went four and two-thirds innings, only allowing one run on three hits and struck out seven. Gustafson earned the win to improve to 5-1 on the season. Jack Horn took over in relief in the bottom of the fifth inning and pitched two and one-third, allowing two runs on two hits and retiring five batters on strikes. Josh Cohen and Ryan Gallagher split the last two innings of work for the potters to preserve the win.
